“3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. 4 Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD in an everlasting rock.”
Isaiah 26:3-4 ESV
What is perfect peace? Is it a feeling that is fleeting or easily lost? During our monthly safety meeting my manager always asks: “What is safety?” to which he answers, “Safety is a lifestyle.” Perfect peace is a lifestyle that is marked by placing our trust and faith in the Lord. In this passage, Isaiah tells us exactly what that looks like. The first and most crucial part is trust. Some of us might have a difficult time trusting others because of bad experiences and so we close ourselves off so as not to be vulnerable again. However, Isaiah tells us that to experience perfect peace, we are to “trust in the LORD forever,” which is quite the opposite. The second part of this is keeping our mind focused on the LORD. To pray without ceasing and always seek the will of God. This is how we work towards a lifestyle of perfect peace.
When I was a little girl, I found it incredibly easy to place all of my trust in God. Even when I didn’t know what the next day would bring and even when I didn’t know the outcome of a situation. It was never hard for me to place my trust in God and experience the peace in knowing that something greater than myself would handle all of my troubles. Though, over the years, as I have experienced more life and trying situations, my natural human instinct has been to try and fix those situations all on my own. Since reaching adulthood, that feeling of peace has slowly turned into one of anxiety, worry, and distrust. Even though I know that when I turn and trust God and relinquish my troubles to him, I could have that feeling of serenity that I once did as a child knowing that my God who loves me, is working all things together for my good and that a life of perfect peace is not a life without hardship and trial. Perfect peace is resting in God’s presence and trusting that, even when life is not peaceful, I can choose to be.
